CNS is one of Australia’s main regional airports, offering flights to a variety of domestic and international destinations. Nestled between mountains, mangroves, and the coral sea, it is the gateway to the world heritage great barrier reef and tropical rainforests of north queensland, and it is only 7 kilometers from cairns CBD. Before ceasing operations in June 2006, the airport served as the principal base for Australian airlines, as well as the royal flying doctor service and the queensland government’s search and rescue helicopters.

The domestic terminal is ranked second, with five jet bridges and 17 gates, while the international terminal ranks first, with six jet bridges and ten gates. The domestic terminal serves flights from qantas, jetstar, and virgin australia, whereas the international terminal serves cathay pacific, air new zealand, jetstar, continental, and air nuigini.
Runways:
The airport has a single runway that is 3,156 meters long. The flight path to the north of the main runway passes immediately over cairns’ northern beach areas, while the path to the south passes straight over the center of cairns. To the east, there is usually a short runway used for general aviation, whose final approach crosses the main runway. As of april 2011, this runway was closed and turned into a helipad area.

Lounges & Other Services:
The qantas club lounge (Domestic) is located on Level 1 of the domestic terminal (T2) following security. It provides comfortable seating, workstations, Wi-Fi, refreshments and a calm environment.
